In this chapter, we analyze the relation of values that emerged due to the creation, sometime between the 8th and the 7th centuries B.C., of a new type of heavily armed infantryman, the hoplite, unknown before that time. We wish to argue that the emergence of democracy in classical Greece was precipitated by the appearance of this new type of warrior, the hoplite and the new tactics that were developed as the most suitable form to accommodate the hoplites. The new tactical battle formation, the phalanx, led to the development of new values and ideals in the field of battle, which, once established, became widely accepted, and thus were introduced also in the political field.
